Rebecca Traister & Hendrik Hertzberg: Pain & Politics
Every day, the story changes. Sarah Palin's the leader of the Republican party--except that she can't raise money. Eliot Spitzer is a disgrace (but has a TV show), and David Vitter can run for reelection on a "family values" platform. The NAACP wants the Tea Party movement to declare itself not racist, and suddenly the NAACP is racist. And we can't even get started on the BP disaster--mostly because BP won't let reporters near the scene of the crime.

Jeff Biggers, Rebecca Traister & Hendrik Hertzberg, and Hoarders
Yet another coal miner was killed on the job this week, and journalist and author Jeff Biggers says that the situation has reached crisis level--that it's a war on miners. He also notes that abuse of the land and abuse of the people who work on it has always gone hand in hand, so as pressure for mountaintop removal and new coal mines mounts, so do safety violations--the latest being a story broken by NPR, that a methane gas monitor at the Little Big Branch mine, where 29 workers died in an explosion in April, had been deliberately shut down.

Maya Wiley: Afraid to Talk About Race
We have a problem around talking about race in this country, says Maya Wiley of the Center for Social Inclusion. There are those on the right who would shut down any discussion of racial issues, instead claiming that mentioning race at all makes the mentioner the racist. Whether the subject is a jobs bill or a Tea Party rally sign, a mention of race is all it takes to cut off all possibility of productive conversation.

Joy Harjo: Poem for Lena Horne
Actress and activist Lena Horne passed away this week at the age of 92. She was memorialized around the U.S. and the world as a beloved entertainer, but some have noted her background in work with the NAACP and the Civil Rights movement--as John Nichols wrote at The Nation, "Such appearances earned Horne a reputation, she joked, as the 'bad little Red girl.'"

Cathy Albisa, After-School Programs, and Joy Harjo
President Obama got his second chance to nominate a Supreme Court justice not even a year after the first one with the retirement of John Paul Stevens, the Court's oldest member and its liberal backbone. He has nominated Elena Kagan, the current Solicitor General and the former Dean of Harvard Law School, but many progressives are unhappy with the choice, wishing that Obama had instead chosen a staunch liberal who would not run the risk of moving the Court to the right.

Bill Fletcher Jr.: Remembering Dorothy Height, Benjamin Hooks
Dorothy Height and Benjamin Hooks both passed away recently; as trailblazing leaders in the movements for civil rights, they both worked to make a better world not just for African-Americans, but for everyone. Height was a feminist and an outspoken activist for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people, and Hooks led the NAACP through a transitional period in its long history.
